Spirituality in Movies

I think most of us would agree that good stories, whether that be a novel, a comic book, a movie, or a tv show, all have some sort of reflection period in them that make us question something about ourselves, or in a greater sense, humanity. These are the stories that stick with us. I’ll never forget the aging love story in Amour. I’ll never forget how The Fountain gave me insight on how one might struggle coping with the death of a loved one. I’ll never forget how The Descendants made me want to leave a positive legacy for my children someday. The themes and messages a film leaves as its legacy have always interested me much more than say technical achievements, or quality of acting.

Top Ten Movies of 2012

Due to me being a man of limited means and time, I’ve come up far short of seeing every 2012 movie I wanted to. With that being said, here are my top ten films I saw in the year 2012.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture

 

(1979 – Director: Robert Wise   Cast: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy)

Star Trek has been severely absent from my life.  Up until last night I hadn’t seen ANY of the original Star Trek movies.  My knowledge of Star Trek has come by osmosis through pop culture and 2009’s Star Trek.

Prometheus

 

(2012 – Director: Ridley Scott Cast: Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender)

After seeing Prometheus in 3D at my first midnight screening since The Dark Knight, I can safely say that Ridley Scott has created one of his finest masterpieces. Alien is what set him apart, and it’s only fitting that Prometheus comes at a time when Scott is nearing the end of his career.
